A skin condition resulting in itching, redness and raised scales over the scalp is termed “scalp psoriasis”. This skin condition is actually a kind of plaque that develops over the scalp. This condition is considered an incurable skin ailment, but it is controllable with treatment.

Since scalp psoriasis is incurable, the goal of treatment for this condition is not to cure, but to achieve the following:

  • Controlling the skin condition and its outbursts
  • Relief from the outbreaks

With these goals in mind, the options available for the treatment of the skin condition are comprised of four main areas.

  1. Oral medications
  2. Skin applications
  3. Injections and infusions
  4. Phototherapy

Usually, the first three options are utilized for the milder cases of scalp psoriasis, whereas the last option is only utilized for treating severe skin conditions.

Oral medications
The oral medications available for the treatment of the condition are either over-the-counter medications or prescription medications. These medications are to be taken orally for reliving the symptoms of the skin condition. These medications must have the following ingredients in their composition in order to be successful.

  • Anathralin
  • Salicylic acid
  • Calcipotriene
  • Corticosteroid
  • Coal Tar
  • Retinoid

Aside from these proper medications some multivitamins have also proven to be effective treatments as well. The key vitamins that help in relieving the condition are:

  • Vitamin D (can be taken orally or through sunlight)
  • Vitamin A

Skin applications

The treatment of scalp psoriasis with direct skin applications can also be helpful. In the cases where the skin condition has mild symptoms the skin application is very effective, whereas with moderate and intense symptoms the effect is dampened.

One thing to note is that this classification of treatments are topical. This can make it somewhat difficult to utilize on the scalp since it needs to be applied to the skin directly and not the hair.

Injections and Infusions

The third option available for scalp psoriasis treatment is the administration of injections and infusions. The injections or the infusions should be made locally to the affected area. This is, like skin applications, usually more effective where the symptoms are of a mild nature.

Phototherapy

The fourth option available for scalp psoriasis reliefis phototherapy. The light sources used in the phototherapy are either laser sources or non-laser sources. This is generally done after it is determined that topical treatments fail to relieve the symptoms.

Phototherapy actually is most effective but is only applied over the scalp when intense symptoms outburst.

Other than artificial light sources, sunlight is also used for the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Sunlight delivers vitamin D to the body which is very much effective for the controlling of the symptoms of the skin condition.

Scalp psoriasis is a non-contagious skin condition that is not curable but is controllable with the proper treatment. As mentioned above, the four options go a long way to being an effective way to control the condition.

Any suggestions on treating psoriasis.
Can you explain what greek folk remedy is.

Hello there. First off: keep your skin moisturized; Avoid scratches and cuts; sunbathe (in moderation, of course); increase vitamin D and omega-3 supplement intake.
Stay away from steroids and immuno-depressants (humira and the like): they do more harm than good. Excercise, generate good thoughts and maintain a sunny outlook.
Try the herbal anti-psoriasis spray and cream combo from Champori.com: it is natural and works better than anything else for my plaque psoriasis (I haven’t had a flare-up for over a year now after only few weeks of treatment!)
Best,
Bernadette
