It’s certainly not the most severe injury you could experience, but a sprained ankle is very painful and can cause a lot of inconvenience. When you sprain your ankle, you tend to realise just how important having two functioning ankles is to almost everything you do on a daily basis. Moving around, even putting clothes on and the way that you sit down are all things impacted by a sprained ankle.
But let’s get back to the basic question here of what exactly is a sprained ankle? Simply, it’s an injury to the ligaments. The ligaments, which are the bands of tissue connecting one bone to another, can be injured by overstretching or an unexpected sharp pull.

The inversion sprain is the most common type of ankle sprain and happens when the sole of the foot turns inwards. This makes the outer side ligaments stretch and it squeezes the inner ligaments. This sort of injury causes a lot of physical pain but is not unusual, especially in sports where you’re required to stop and start a lot or have to change direction quickly and frequently.
But what about treating a sprained ankle. Well, as there is with any injury or ailment, there is a variety of pain relieving and recovery enhancing treatments on the market. But the immediate treatments, those carried out by yourself immediately after the injury, should follow the PRICE recovery. This is short for protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation, which are the recommended moves you make following the injury.
